Microsoft Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

Microsoft has unveiled its largest-ever investment in Australia and will invest A$25 billion in the country by 2029 to accelerate artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity capabilities. The announcement was made during Microsoft AI Tour Sydney, alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Satya Nadella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, reinforcing the strategic alignment between the company and the government’s national AI ambitions.

The investment will significantly expand Microsoft Azure AI and supercomputing infrastructure across Australia, strengthening local capacity for next-generation applications, data processing, and enterprise workloads. It also includes initiatives aimed at enhancing national cyber resilience and equipping millions of Australians with workforce-ready digital skills.

“Australia has an enormous opportunity to translate AI into real economic growth and societal benefit”, Nadella said. “This investment is about expanding cloud and AI capacity, strengthening cybersecurity, and ensuring broad access to the skills needed in an AI-driven economy.”

Strengthening Australia’s position in the global AI race

The A$25 billion investment marks a significant step in positioning Australia as a leader in AI-driven innovation. It builds on a previous A$5 billion commitment announced in 2023, which expanded Microsoft’s datacentre footprint to 29 sites across three Azure regions and helped train more than one million Australians in digital and AI skills.

With plans to grow its infrastructure footprint by more than 140% by 2029, Microsoft aims to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performance cloud environments capable of supporting both public and private sector transformation.

The initiative is aligned with the Australian Government’s national priorities, including clean energy transition, sustainable resource usage, and the development of local skills and innovation ecosystems.

Cybersecurity and national resilience at the core

A key pillar of the investment is the expansion of the Microsoft–Australian Signals Directorate Cyber Shield, developed in partnership with the Australian Signals Directorate.

The program will be extended to additional federal agencies, improving threat visibility, strengthening security configurations, and protecting critical infrastructure. Since its launch, the initiative has already secured more than 38,000 government accounts, identified dozens of previously unknown vulnerabilities, and delivered enhanced monitoring capabilities.

Microsoft is also deepening its collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs Australia to strengthen national digital resilience, with a focus on secure connectivity and hyperscale cloud infrastructure.

Scaling AI infrastructure and responsible innovation

As part of the investment, Microsoft will expand its AI supercomputing capabilities and deploy advanced processors to support increasingly complex AI models and enterprise applications.

The company will also collaborate with the Australian AI Safety Institute to support the safe and responsible deployment of artificial intelligence technologies. The partnership will focus on evaluating advanced AI systems and addressing risks related to human-AI interaction.

Training three million Australians for the AI economy

Beyond infrastructure, Microsoft will train three million Australians by 2028 in AI and digital skills, one of the largest workforce development initiatives in the country’s history.

The program includes new education and workforce initiatives, such as AI training for educators and tools to support students in career decision-making, as well as programs designed to help nonprofit organizations adopt AI responsibly.

These efforts highlight the urgency of workforce transformation as AI reshapes industries, job roles, and business models across the economy.

A strategic move for enterprise transformation

For enterprises operating in Australia, Microsoft’s investment signals a major acceleration in access to advanced cloud and AI capabilities. Expanded local infrastructure, combined with stronger cybersecurity frameworks and a skilled workforce pipeline, is expected to reduce barriers to adoption and enable faster digital transformation.

As organizations increasingly embed AI into finance, supply chain, HR, and customer experience workflows, platforms like Azure will play a critical role in driving productivity, efficiency, and innovation.
